Pole Barn Building Durability and Strength
Why pole barns are so strong.
The combination of a wood frame and steel (or OSB) “skin” creates a diaphragm, providing remarkable strength. Although impressively strong, it does allow the structure to flex slightly when under adverse conditions, instead of cracking or crumbling like many other structures.
The columns are connected horizontally with girts, creating a strong box that adds to wind and seismic resistance. Because trusses are directly attached to the columns (rather than toe-nailed in like in stud wall construction), it is virtually impossible for the roof to detach from the building.
If your pole barn has columns in the ground, this adds additional stability and wind resistance that other methods can’t match.
