Richland Community Colleges fire engine is parked in Warrensburg, its vehicle rescue trailer is in South Wheatland, and other equipment is in a campus closet.
That soon will change.
In a partnership fostered by the Farm Progress Show, Richlands fire science program will gain a new firehouse. The building is being constructed by Farm Progress exhibitor FBi Buildings Inc. of Remington, Ind., for use during the show. Richland will begin moving in equipment after the show ends.
Its really going to benefit our program, said Tony Vespa, fire science coordinator. He also anticipates using the Farm Progress grounds for educational drills.
Richland recently bought a fire engine but didnt have a place on campus to keep the vehicle. Covered parking is essential for a fire engine especially in the winter months, so the on-truck water tank doesnt freeze.
After buying the engine, the college sought grants to build a fire station. The price tag was estimated at about $60,000 to $70,000.
The school was able to work with FBi to plan a heating system, a concrete floor and insulation for the building, Vespa said.
The cooperation between the company and the school reduced Richlands costs for its own fire station, and the building will improve the colleges already hands on approach to fire science education.
We probably will be the first fire science program downstate with its own firehouse, Vespa said.
