Round Barn Going Up In Tippecanoe County

Lafayette, Ind. -- June 25, 2003 -- Construction of a three-story, 11,400-square-foot round barn is underway at 4263 State Road 25 North. The barn is a private project for Wandering Acres LLC and its principles, Dennis and Wanda Owen. They will use the facility on the property’s 100 acres just north of Lafayette primarily to house horses.

“I’m going to get that horse I never got as a kid,” said Wanda Owen, who now owns three ponies and five goats. She plans to soon acquire both full-size and miniature horses. “Because of its distinctive look, we expect the barn to be a landmark.”

“When we complete construction on August 20, this will be the largest round barn in Indiana,” said Pat Glon of West Lafayette’s P.L. Glon Consulting, P.C., who coordinated design and is managing the project.

FBi Buildings Inc. of Remington, Ind., began construction of the three-story, wood-frame barn in mid-April. Its roof will be shingled in green with the Wandering Acres brand as part of the design. The barn itself will be white. “We’ve applied all our best-of-practice knowledge in this unique building,” said Kurt Williams, FBi project developer. “It’s a striking, dramatic design that’s visually exciting for people to see. At the same time, we’re creating a comfortable, safe home for the animals who will live there.”

The barn’s features include 10 horse stalls, a 14-foot-wide indoor track around the first-floor perimeter, offices, tack room, washing area, hayloft, storage areas and third-story windowed walkway. “The barn will stand 50-feet tall at the cupola and be topped by a lightning-resistant weathervane,” Glon said.

P.L. Glon Consulting frequently serves as a design and construction consultant, recently overseeing Lafayette’s newest Dairy Queen.
