Danville Gardens Expands Its Facilities Danville, Ill. November 20, 2002 Danville Gardens, 1307 Cleary Ave. in Danville, has expanded its facilities, adding a 7,000-square-foot office and warehouse facility on its seven-acre site. Finishing interior touches are now underway. By month-end the building will house offices and warehouse space for the retail and wholesale nursery business. &Besides the functional interior, which includes 2,000 square feet for offices and a loading dock to the warehouse, the building features a striking exterior,” says Jeff Trask, project sales consultant for FBi Buildings of Remington, Ind., the company that designed and constructed the building. “A six-foot round window provides a grand office entrance. And the colors chosen--an evergreen roof, clay siding and brown nova brick--complement the business’s focus on nature.” Founded in the early 1900s, Danville Gardens was purchased in 1993 by Nathan and Lisa Campbell. A graduate of DuPage Horticulture School, Nathan grew up in the industry; his parents own a southern Indiana greenhouse. Lisa holds a biology degree from Indiana University. In the decade they’ve operated the business, it’s grown six-fold and is now the largest area garden center. Danville Gardens employs eight full-time and from 10 to 12 part-time, depending on the season. The business is open from early March through the end of December each year. Its facilities include 100,000 square feet of greenhouse space in four buildings, a soil mixing/transplanting facility and the new building. &About 65 percent of our business is on-site retail sales and 35 percent wholesale in about a 100-mile radius,” says Lisa Campbell. “We raise about 95 percent of everything we sell.” That includes annuals and perennials. Purchases include all the advice customers need. “We spend a lot of time with our customers, giving them advice on what to plant where. We help educate them so they become good gardeners.” Currently, some 25,000 poinsettias in about a dozen different colors are growing in the greenhouses for the Christmas season. FBi Buildings was founded in 1958 and today ranks among the Midwest’s top design/build firms. Its 290 employees include architects, engineers, construction professionals and support personnel. The company has constructed more than 15,000 commercial, industrial, office, church and retail buildings in Illinois and Indiana. |
